Typical SA Household High pressure geyser and collector system with electricity backup

You have an electric geyser and realise that you can use a combination of the sun and modern technology to heat your water. You also want to do help your environment but not have any inconvenience when you do this.

For you we have the high pressure 100, 150, 200 or 250 litre heat pipe solar systems with electrical backup.

OPTIONS:

1a.Convert Existing Geyser to Solar - Split system with geyser inside the roof

You have a regular electric geyser and realise that you can use a combination of the sun and modern technology to heat your water.
We recommend that in the first instance, you use your existing geyser and add a solar heating system to it. When your geyser next needs replacing, order a solar geyser with a 10 year guarantee. This prevents wasting a perfectly good geyser

How to Convert: If your regular geyser is still new, you can add a solar heating panel, conversion valves and a circulating pump.

What it involves :

  1. Mounting a solar water heating collector (panel) on your roof.

  2. Adding a conversion kit which connects the heating panel to your geyser with the necessary valves and fittings.

  3. Installing a low power circulating pump to move water from the hot panel to your geyser.

Cost of heating panel (Exc Installation) - Heating panels are sized by tube diameter ( 58mm), length ( 1800mm) and amount of tubes (12, 18 or 24). The manifold material is AKG galvanized powder coated steel ( best value) , AKT stainless steel or AKH anodized aluminium ( most attractive). The panels are sized according to the amount of hot water usage per day and the part of South Africa where the installation will take place. This is guided by the annual sunshine received in that area.

Radiation example : Durban has 30% less sunshine energy than Johannesburg, so would need a larger panel.

Usage example 1 : A retired couple has a 150 litre geyser and uses 2 showers per day in Cape Town. We would recommend a 58-1800/12 or 18 heating panel.

Usage example 2: A family of 4 has a 150 litre geyser and uses 4 showers per day in Cape Town. We would recommend a 58-1800-24 heating panel.

We also check the geyser insulation and timing and ensure optimum energy usage for the user.

A full conversion kit will use one heating panel, one pump and pump unions, one pump controller and geyser element timer, one air release valve, three isolation valves, one non-return valve and approx 3 lengths of 15mm copper piping and 9 lengths 15mm insulation.

In addition you will need approx 5 m 4.0mm electrical wiring for the element; roof sealing as required - AND our expertise:)

The guideline installation prices are R2000 to R4500 ex VAT :

Installation labour varies but generally takes a full day ( 8 hours) and can be from R285 to R400 per hour according to your installation company

1b New Solar geyser close coupled system with geyser outside on the roof

You want a new solar geyser and are happy to have the tank and heating panel on the outside of your roof.

What it involves :

  1. Mounting a frame for the geyser ( tank) and a frame with the solar collector on your roof

  2. 200 litre thermosiphon

Connecting to your existing plumbing cold water and hot water systems. (not included in our pricing)

  3. Adding new Pressure reducing valves and vacuum breakers, a new geyser timer and a new electrical point for your electrical backup.

A full new system will use one geyser and mounting frame, one heating panel and mounting frame, one new PRV and 2 vacuum breakers, approx 2 lengths of 22mm copper piping and 9 lengths 22mm insulation.

In addition you will need 5 m 4.0mm electrical wiring for the element; a waterproof external box with the isolator and timer installed; roof sealing as required.

You can choose your type of geyser - in CAPE TOWN we use copper, steel, steel with PEX lining, stainless steel and fibreglass geysers. The most affordable 400 kPa geysers for external use are steel with PEX lining , copper or fibreglass. The most affordable 200 kPa geysers for external use are copper. In GAUTENG, your installer can recommend a geyser for you.

Installation labour varies but generally takes a full day ( 8 hours) and can be from R285 to R400 per hour according to your installation company. The more experienced installers are worth the extra cost! Make sure they are SESSA members.
